About Giving Hearts Day

As part of a continual improvement program at Fargo, North Dakota-based Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF), Giving Hearts Day arose in 2008 as a simple but unique fundraising concept: Around Valentine’s Day, ask people to show affection to not only people they love but charities, too. In the decade-plus since, the event has gone on to become one of the longest-running and most successful giving days in the country, providing a platform for North Dakota and northwest Minnesota charities to raise over $138 million.

It’s not just a day, though. It’s a year-round effort. Using skills taught by DMF and Fargo-based Impact, charities build a fundraising system that they put to use on Giving Hearts Day, the “Super Bowl” of giving in the Upper Midwest. It has become the region’s day to feed the hungry, nurture the elderly, and educate tomorrow’s leaders.

Giving Stories

Matt's Automotive

Giving back to the community is one of the values that shape the strong culture at Matt’s Automotive. Their organization is involved in giving, volunteerism, and donating goods for Giving Hearts Day. Matt’s Automotive financially supports charities near and dear to their hearts, invites employees, business partners, and clients to get involved (even putting Giving Hearts Day invitations into each vehicle they service!), and ran a “goods” campaign that offered a free oil change for those who brought in a bag of groceries for those in need.

Dr. Sue and Grant

Dr. Sue Mathison and her son, Grant, have been a part of Giving Hearts Day since the event began in 2008. Each year, they sit down and go through the giving profile of every participating charity, and Grant chooses which ones to give to. Last year, the Mathisons sponsored Grant’s entire classroom, providing each student with a $10 Giving Hearts Day gift card.

Jenny Olson

When Jenny Olson hosted 45 students in her child’s first-grade class on Giving Hearts Day last year, the response was overwhelmingly positive. She says, “I was blown away by how eight- and nine-year-olds immediately thought beyond themselves. They didn’t choose to give to the local sports teams they may be a part of. They chose to give to causes that represented people they knew with a real need.
